Hello Customers, Colleagues, and Friends,
We are extremely saddened to write to you regarding the tragic vessel collision causing the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, which resulted in the loss of lives and the blockage of the channel accessing the Port of Baltimore. This disaster is still unfolding and the purpose of this message is to inform you of how this may affect your international supply chains. Our thoughts and prayers remain with the victims and all involved in this horrific incident.
As your trusted freight forwarder and US Customs broker, we are committed to ensuring the smooth transit of your goods, even in the face of unexpected challenges. Taking into account the disruption at the Baltimore port, we want to reassure you that we are actively monitoring the situation and are prepared to take necessary steps to mitigate any potential delays or disruptions with your shipments.
At this time, there is no expected timeline for the salvage efforts of the downed bridge and the resumption of operations at the Port of Baltimore. What is known is that this situation is expected to be prolonged and will affect the Port of Baltimore and the other major US East Coast port operations for the foreseeable future.
The major ocean carriers are currently diverting vessels to surrounding ports for offload, namely NY/NJ and Norfolk. Should your cargo be rerouted to alternative ports, we stand ready to assist you with transloading services and specialized trucking services to ensure the cargo reaches its end destination as efficiently as possible. Although carriers are exploring options to utilize rail service to route cargo to Baltimore after offloading at alternative ports, it is likely much of the freight will be discharged and terminated in the alternative port locations via Force Majeure formalities.
We do expect costs associated with shipping to other US East Coast ports will increase due to the resulting supply chain challenges. These cost increases are yet to be seen but are expected to affect many US East coast routed import and export freight.
Please do not hesitate to reach out to us if you have any questions or concerns regarding your shipments, or if you require any assistance navigating the current situation. Thank you for your continued trust in our services. We remain fully committed to delivering the exceptional service and support you expect from us.
Takeaways:
- Significant additional costs for freight already destined for Baltimore
- Heightened Import Ocean Freight costs to other US East Coast ports
- Expected delays and disruptions for freight utilizing East Coast routings
- Tightened export capacity at East Coast ports absorbing export volume from Baltimore
Please continue to plan accordingly for your import, export, and domestic transportation needs.
Sincerely, Your friends at Krenz and Hannan International
