We are writing to inform you of an important update regarding the tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada.
Partial Suspension of Mexico and Canada Tariffs
Just two days after the implementation of 25% tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada, the White House has announced a suspension of these tariffs for goods that qualify for duty-free treatment under the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).
As of 12:01 a.m. EST on March 7, imports that are eligible for duty-free entry under general note 11 to the HTSUS, including provisions in subchapter XXIII of chapter 98 and subchapter XXII of chapter 99, will no longer be subject to the additional tariffs.
While administration officials have indicated these tariff suspensions will remain in place until April 2, no formal termination date has been issued in the executive orders, leaving the potential for further extensions or adjustments.
This move comes after significant pressure from the automotive and agricultural industries, as well as lobbying efforts from key stakeholders. Reports indicate that the suspension will impact about half of imports from Mexico and roughly 38% of imports from Canada.
What This Means for You
- Importers should take immediate action to ensure USMCA eligibility for affected goods in order to benefit from the tariff suspension. USMCA documentation is required for all applicable imports
