Dear Valued Customer,
Krenz & Hannan International would like to provide a quick reminder regarding the importance of proper marks and numbers on international shipments.
Whether shipping FCL, LCL, or breakbulk cargo, packages should be clearly and consistently marked so they can be readily identified throughout the transportation process. Proper markings help carriers, warehouses, terminals, Customs, and other parties correctly identify cargo and reduce the risk of delays, misrouting, handling issues, or discrepancies during Customs clearance.
Recommended Marks & Numbers
As applicable to the shipment, packages, pallets, crates, or other shipping units should be clearly marked with:
- Consignee and/or identifying shipping mark
- Purchase Order, Shipment, or Reference Number
- Package Numbering — e.g., 1 of 4, 2 of 4, 3 of 4, 4 of 4
- Gross Weight
- Dimensions, when applicable
- Any required handling instructions or special markings
Most importantly, the marks and numbers physically appearing on the cargo should correspond with the commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading, and other applicable shipping documentation.
Wood Packaging Reminder
Any regulated wood packaging material used in international transportation — including pallets, crates, blocking, bracing, and dunnage — should comply with applicable ISPM 15 requirements and bear the appropriate markings when required.
A Simple Step That Can Prevent Bigger Problems
Clear and accurate cargo markings are a relatively small part of the shipping process, but they can help prevent costly delays and confusion once cargo enters the international transportation chain.
We encourage importers and exporters to review their packaging and marking procedures with their suppliers, vendors, and shipping departments to ensure cargo is properly identified before it is tendered for transportation.
If you have questions regarding marks and numbers, documentation requirements, or an upcoming international shipment, please contact the Krenz & Hannan International team.
Thank you for your continued business and partnership.
Sincerely, Your friends at Krenz & Hannan International
